Tuesday Tales: From the word BITE

NEW TT BADGEWelcome to June’s last Tuesday Tales, the weekly blog where a select group of authors invites you  to follow our works in progress. Each week, we write to a word or picture prompt. This week, our word prompt is BITE.

I continue with Buck’s Fizz, my novella.

“I don’t think that’s going to work,” Rachel said. “Becky, I think we need to have a look at our stuff this afternoon and fit her in for a number each set. We’re scheduled to do four, right?”

“Yeah. Jess, why don’t you pick those you know best, and maybe we can do ‘Crying’ for the boss. Remember, we’ve got to suck up to the crowd, or it’s adios in the morning.”

She’d called me Jess—second time today. Now, that was a first. Before I could answer, we crested a hill, and the big house came into view.

“Holy shit!” Rachel leaned so far forward, her nose brushed the windshield. “We’ve just stepped into The Twilight Zone. It’s like we’ve arrived at Southfork, straight onto the set of Dallas.”

My jaw dropped at the sight of the stately house with its fine white pillars, something I would’ve expected to see in Georgia or the Carolinas. Was that really a green lawn? The dust vanished as we followed our leader onto a paved driveway and around to the side of the house. Lance pulled up in front of the garage. I turned my head and glared behind us at a straight paved road that must hook up with the highway that past in front of The Squawking Tomcat. Had the ride from hell been another way for him to show his annoyance?

He stopped his truck and motioned Becky should park next to him. The van hadn’t quite stopped when I threw open the door, desperate for some fresh air. As soon as it did, I peeled myself off the leatherette seat and limped over to an old pecan tree, dropping onto the cool grass in the shade beneath it. Within seconds, Elise and Rachel joined me, followed by Becky.

“I’ll just sit here for a while,” she mumbled, handing us each a bottle of warm water.

“Welcome to Cloverdale Ranch,” Lance said, his eyes opening wide at the sight of us, dusty and soaking wet, before focusing on my black lace bra.

Yup, here we are, the only candidates in your wet t-shirt contest. Like what you see, pervert?

He frowned. “You should’ve mentioned you didn’t have air conditioning. I would’ve driven slower so you could’ve opened the windows or taken you around the long way.”

“Bite me,” I mumbled, too hot and too tired to care what he thought of me.

That’s it. Stay safe and don’t forget to check out the other Tuesday Tales.

Book Three of the Golden Legacy Available Today!

Treasure chest

It’s here! The third book based on The Golden Legacy is live today!

Several months ago a few authors got together and decided to create a series of books based on the same premise. The books could be set in any time period and could be any genre, but while they are released in a specific order, they don’t have to be read that way. So what makes them a series? They all o revolve around one basic principle:

THE GOLDEN LEGACY

In the early 1700s, a pirate brigantine attacked a merchant ship, The Golden Fleece, in the Caribbean. Although smaller, the merchant ship bested the pirate craft that contained a treasure trove of gold and jewels. A dying pirate claimed the Incas had cursed anyone who misused the treasure, hence the reason the merchant crew was victorious. The treasure would also bless anyone who used it for good. The greedy merchant captain, James Carlson, was killed during the battle, but his eighteen-year-old daughter, Sarah, survived in her cabin. Mindful of the curse and to thank God for their salvation, she asked the crew members to split the treasure equally, but to make a binding pledge that they would keep only twenty percent for their own use, and give ten percent to help others. With the rest, each was to buy something of great value that could be passed down to their descendants, with the curse passing onto anyone who broke the line and used it selfishly. If used selfishly, the treasure would be lost, but reappear in some form after skipping a generation. Every three weeks a new book will tell you what happens to other Golden Legacy descendants.

I started the series with the Historical Romance, Twist of Fate A few weeks later, Nancy Radke released The Prisoner Returns . Today, the third book, Rebecca York’s Race for the Gold joins the series.

The Golden Legacy 3 first

Race For The GoldThe Golden Legacy, Rebecca York

Matthew Connor has three big problems. As his horse farm fell on hard times in Depression-era Maryland, his wife left him for another man, abandoning their five-year-old daughter, Jenny. Now he suspects someone is trying to sabotage his business. When Hannah Henry snatches Jenny from the path of a speeding car, Matt is sure fate has intervened and hires Hannah as the girl’s nanny. As he watches them bond, he falls for the young woman who is giving his daughter a renewed sense of security. Yet he’s reluctant to risk his heart again. When Hannah comes into money from the Golden Legacy, she tries to find a way to banish his financial worries without wounding the pride of the man she loves. But will the saboteur succeed before Matt realizes that Hannah’s heart is the only treasure that matters.

EXCERPT:

“Jenny, get back.” he shouted, hearing the terror in his own voice as he hurtled down the steps. He could have been a drowning man with his life flashing before his eyes. Only he was seeing moments with his daughter, from the tender to the terrible, like when Darlene had driven away with her lover.

Instead of getting out of the truck’s way, Jenny stopped in her tracks, and he knew the vehicle was too close for him to reach her first.

Still, Matt kept running, fear focusing his vision. Just before the truck reached the small figure, a young woman with a braid flying behind her dashed into the path of the speeding vehicle. Without a thought to her own safety, she snatched Jenny up and flung the two of them away from disaster.

Moving too fast to stop, she crashed into a parked wagon, still holding Jenny, curling her body around the little girl to protect her from the impact with the stationary object.

From the corner of his vision, Matt saw the Ford speed away. He couldn’t tell much about the driver. The man wore a hat pulled low, partially hiding his face.

Could the idiot really not have seen the child in his path? Or had he deliberately tried to mow her down?

The speculation was beside the point as he turned to the young woman and the girl.

Struggling to catch his breath, he gasped out, “Are you all right?”

The woman and Jenny both looked up at him. Jenny seemed confused as though she didn’t understand what had almost happened.

The woman appeared shaken to her core as she acknowledged her brush with death.

“Yes, sir.” she wheezed, a runner catching her breath after a sprint.

Jenny started to cry. He scooped her up, sat down on the steps and rocked her in his arms. As he comforted her, he saw she was still holding Emeline.

Looking up over his daughter’s head, he focused on the young woman a few feet away.

“You could have gotten killed,” he breathed.

“I just saw the car and the little girl. I had to try and save her.”

She started to shake.

“Sit down.”

She collapsed onto the step near him. By degrees, he saw her nerves settling.

She straightened, looking embarrassed to have reacted so strongly. He wanted to put a reassuring hand on her arm, but it wouldn’t be proper to touch a woman he didn’t know.

“You saved my daughter,” he murmured. “How can I ever repay you?”

She swallowed hard. As he watched, her expression took on a look of determination—and hope.

“I was coming here to look at the notice board—looking for a job. Do you know of anyone who needs help?”

Tuesday Tales: From the Word SUNNY

NEW TT BADGEWelcome back to Tuesday Tales as we continue to adjust to this new normal, I keep remembering the good old days–you know the ones we thought were so bad.

Tuesday Tales is a weekly blog where a select group of authors share their current works in progress with you. To make it more challenging, we incorporate a word or picture prompt into our stories. This week’s word prompt is SUNNY.

I’m continuing with the novella I started two weeks ago, entitled, Buck’s Fizz.  Enjoy!

I stood up from the piano as if my entire world hadn’t just tilted, grateful I’d taken the time to disguise my appearance, cursing the pride that had made me give myself away. If that CD were still kicking around, it was likely he would recognize my voice since I’d sung lead on that, too.

While I wasn’t the only one who’d walked away from the sand at dawn eight years ago, he might not see it that way, and judging by his attitude toward Maureen, he probably hadn’t liked being a one-night-stand. So how had my long-haired Poseidon with the sunny disposition become a sourpuss cowboy with a brush cut and a daughter? It wasn’t a question I could ask, but I was dying to find out.

“You can follow me up to the house,” Lance said, grabbing his black Stetson off the bar.

Weren’t the villains usually wearing the ones in black hat? Maybe not. We’d binge watched Have Gun Will travel a few weeks ago when it had rained all weekend, and while The Lone Ranger might wear a white hat, Paladin was a good guy, but wore black.

Why did everything have to be so complicated? Love ‘em or Leave ‘em Lance, in his black Stetson, could be either or both. He was giving us a shot at the job—no guarantees yet—but he certainly didn’t look happy about it.

“Buck!” he yelled, startling us all since we hadn’t expected anyone else to be around.

A man stepped out of what had to be a walk-in cooler, the frosty smoke surrounding him until he closed the door. Buck wasn’t much shorter than Lance, maybe five or ten years older, and almost as good looking. He immediately reminded me of Woody Harrelson. Was he the bartender? He would have the ladies eating out of his hand.

“Yeah, boss?”

“I’ve got to run up to the house. I’ll be back to finish the inventory in a bit.” He smiled bitterly. “By the way, meet tonight’s entertainment, Suzy and the Silvertones.”

Good old Buck’s eyes almost popped out of his head, and his jaw dropped.

“Them’s gals.”

Definitely a Woody clone. The man has to be a genius.

Tuesday Tales: From the Word Servant

NEW TT BADGEWelcome to another edition of Tuesday Tales. This week, the prompt word on which we base our scenes is SERVANT. I’m giving you another taste of Buck’s Fizz. Enjoy.

“Are you out of your ever-loving mind?” Elise hissed. “That’s not one of the songs we cover. We don’t have the range.”

“But I do,” I said. “Casey could’ve too, and since I’m standing in for Casey … Will you trust me with this, or do you want to sit with your thumb up your ass for the next three weeks?”

Becky shook her head. “Go ahead. We’ve got nothing to lose. If we don’t do it, he’ll send us packing and I, for one, want this gig.”

“Then come in on the chorus. I’ll do the rest.” I ran my hands over the keys and inhaled deeply and began to sing. “Now, I’ve heard there was a secret chord that David played, and it pleased the Lord…”

As always, Leonard Cohen’s words filled me. I closed my eyes and played the song I knew so well, pouring every ounce of my soul into the music. When the song was over, I opened my eyes, there was a new respect on the faces of the Silvertones.

“You’ve got quite the voice,” Lance said, his tone just slightly less bitter than when he’d spoken of his ex-wife. “My cousin gave my grandmother a CD she’d recorded with girls from college. She played it up until the day she died. You’ve got the gig, but I don’t think you can bunk in with the hands as I’d planned. You’ll have to stay in the big house.”

“So you’ll honor the contract?” Becky asked,  not ready to look a gift horse in the mouth.

“I will, but if after tonight’s show the audience doesn’t approve, you’re out of here. In the meantime, Lila, looks after my daughter. There aren’t any servants here.” He glared at me. “You’ll just have to fend for yourselves.”

I swallowed. Damn it! It was impossible, but it was true. This was Sable’s cousin, the one I’d wanted badly that last night on the beach—the one I’d given a fake number to. Now, if he ever realized who I was, we would definitely be out of a job.

Hallelujah is one of my favorite songs. Take a minute and listen for yourself.

Tuesday Tales: From a Picture.

NEW TT BADGE

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tuesday Tales. Tuesday Tales is a weekly blog where a small group of select authors share their works in progress with you. Some weeks we write to a word prompt; on others, we use a picture and limit our scenes to 300 words.  This week, I’ve chosen this picture for my post.

Bar for TT

While I have quite a few irons in the fire at the moments, new works yet to be completed, I decided  to start a new novella, which I hope will be published along with three or four others, each named after a specific cocktail.

The first book, Tequila Sunrise, is part of a box set and will be available soon from Amazon. Writing in the first person is somewhat new to me. The story is titled, Buck’s Fizz. Here is the recipe for that drink! Although similar to a Mimosa, the fact that a Buck’s Fizz requires quality champagne and no extras makes it a classy drink. Like my heroine Jewel Wellington, it’s the last thing you would expect to fins in a honky tonk bar.

DIRECTIONS
Chill your Champagne & Orange Juice.
Select tall and elegant shaped wine glasses!
Pour about one third of orange juice into the glass first and then top up with champagne.
Serve as a toast or as a celebration cocktail.
Enjoy!

Here’s your first sip of Buck’s Fizz.

Tired and irritated, feeling like a fish out of water, I stepped into The Squawking Tomcat.

I inhaled—and choked. The air was rife with the aroma of stale beer, even staler bodies, and a scent I recognized as eau de horse. I removed my prescription sunglasses and looked around. Sure it was lighter, but everything was fuzzy.

“Fat lot of good that did,” I grumbled.

What the hell was I doing here? I was a soprano, not a honky tonk singer. I was also on the run from parents who couldn’t imagine their thirty-year-old daughter without a hand-picked husband, Montgomery Reginald Harris, to be exact. “Monte this, and Monte that.” It was enough to make me vomit.

Sure Monte’s pockets were lined with gold, but he had this sickening sense of entitlement to go with it. He never asked for anything—he demanded it—and rudely. The last time we’d been matched up by Mommy Dearest had been at my cousin Tara’s wedding two months ago. He’d made a scene because the poor little server had dared to allow the condensation on the outside of the water jug to drip onto the sleeve of his shiny new jacket.

That was it. If the only way I could have my inheritance from Grandmother Mitchell was to marry that slug, than the rest of the eligible girls in the family were welcome to the money. I’d had enough.

Desperate to get away, I’d packed my bags and run off. No, I hadn’t joined the circus, but after the last four weeks, I wasn’t sure what I’d done was that far off. I’d agreed to fill in for an old college friend with Suzy and the Silvertones, a country and western cover band who toured the Southwest each summer. It wasn’t The Met, but I needed a change.
